Day trip to the Tamar Valley Donkey Park near Gunnislake Station

Wet weather rating * (It has an indoor café!)
Family Rating ****
Travel Rating Moderate; a very tight change on the way and a mile walk from the station along a busy main road with pavement all the way. (A pleasant alternative route is described here, but it does mean walking a little further.)
Journey Time Average 1 hour, then a 20 - 30 minute walk to the park.
Comments The Tamar Valley line is stunning, and all of the stations along the way are worth exploring; Gunnislake village has not got a lot to offer, but the donkey park is a pleasant low key way to spend a sunny day.
Sundays Not possible on Sundays
Notes Soemtimes trips on two seperate lines can have tight changes - it may be worthwhile considering a contingency plan if the trains do not run to time. (A trip round the Barbican and to the Aquarium may be a suitable substitute.) for current timetables, please use the link below.

To reach The Tamar Valley Donkey Park ; From Gunnislake Station; go through car park and turn left up the hill. Continue on this road for nearly a mile, where a sign on the left will direct you to Harrowbarrow and the donkey park. The park is a short distance down the hill on the left.

For a more scenic route along a pleasant quiet country lane, turn left just after the barber’s shop which is about quarter of a mile out of Gunnislake station. Continue along this road for about three quarters of a mile, past a playing field, until you reach a crossroads. Turn right up the hill towards St Anne’s Chapel. The donkey sanctuary is only a short distance on the right from here.

The donkey park has two lovely playgrounds, one for smaller children and another for older children, both with trampolines. For eating, a picnic area is provided and a café is situated at the top of the site, overlooking the younger children’s playground. As well as donkeys there are goats, pigs, chickens, chipmunks and a rabbit enclosure that children can enter. One donkey ride is included in the children’s ticket, extra rides are £1. Food in the way of bags of carrots can be bought for 30p, and these can be fed to most of the animals on site, bar the chipmunks.
