A pleasant combination of an interesting garden and a seaside resort, this trip could
make two days out as it would be easy to fill a whole day in either place. Heligan is open
every day of the year from 10am to 6pm.

In order to get to The Lost Gardens of Heligan, you need to catch a bus from outside St
Austell train station. The bus number is 26 and there are six buses each way on Mondays to
Saturdays only. The bus run takes about half an hour.
The Lost Gardens Of Heligan
One of the most popular gardens in Cornwall, The Lost Gardens of Heligan is similar to the Eden Project in that
it is constantly evolving. The gardens were first ‘discovered’ by Tim Smit, the instigator
of the Eden Project, in 1991. Since then work has been taking place to restore the gardens to their original splendour with pineapple pits, Victorian greenhouses, bothy and summer
houses, lovely vegetable and flower gardens, and a woodland walk.
The gardens are split into three parts. The Northern Gardens are a whole series of gardens
within one garden and include the following; a ravine fernery, Italian garden, New Zealand
garden and grotto, northern summerhouse garden and sundial garden. There are also two acres
of kitchen garden, walled gardens, peach, citrus and melon houses, pineapple pits and formal
beds of herbs and annuals. The second part is the sub tropical jungle, filled with tree ferns,
palms, bamboo thickets, giant gunnera and exotic trees, shrubs and marsh plants. Finally the
lost valley consists of acres of Cornish woodland with lakes, ponds and wild flowers in
abundance.
And of course there is a restaurant, shop and garden centre!

Mevagissy
Mevagissey is a pretty tourist town on the coast with lots of pubs, cafes, restaurants and
all the sort of things you would expect from a coastal resort. It is also a lovely place to
walk along the coast from with a superb beach at Pentewan to the north, or Porthmellion Cove
and Gorran Haven to the south. There are plenty of footpaths so a circular walk would be an
option. The OS Landranger map 204 or OS Explorer 105 cover this area. Buses take an average
of about 22 minutes, and leave hourly from St Austell. There is also The World of Model Railways, a museum and model shop, that is open on Wednesdays and Sundays during the
winter. Tel: 01726 842457
