The terrain is all country lanes, and many of them are very small with hardly any traffic. There are plenty of hills and many of them are long and very steep! |
| Sundays |
Suitable any day of the week - the coastal roads get a bit busy in summer, especially at weekends |
From St Germans railway station turn right onto the B3249 & head towards Polbathic. At
Polbathic turn left, then take the second turning on the right (after about 100 yards.
The first right turn is almost straight on.)
Head up the hill, which is steep and fairly long, then over the brow and down the other
side until you reach a T junction with the B3247 (about three miles in all). Turn right
and head towards Crafthole. Go past the village hall and to the end of this road, turn
right past the pub and then left down the hill towards Portwrinkle.
At Portwrinkle during the summer there is a stall that sells ice creams, drinks and various
beach toys. From here you can either go down the path that leads to the beach, or head
slightly up the hill and a footpath takes you to the top of the hill and across the golf
course. After the course you can take a right hand path over the cliff and reach the
secluded bays that lie between Portwrinkle and Whitsands. This path is quite sheer and
care should be taken. It is very easy to become cut off by the tide in the small bays
in this area, so always be sure to keep an eye on the movement of the sea.
To return you can choose from a variety of routes. The most direct way is to continue
through Portwrinkle, and at the end of the village bear right and up the hill. At the T
junction turn left. Continue along this road for about half a mile, then take a tiny
lane to your right. (This is the first right turn). This leads down a steep lane and
then up the other side of the valley. At the top of the hill is a cross roads and a
residential home called Roseacre. Go straight on until you reach a wider lane. Turn
right and go down the hill to Polbathic. At Polbathic turn left then right and you
are now on the road that leads to St Germans. A scenic route back to St Germans can
be enjoyed by taking the first left off this road up the steep hill. Go past the
beautiful Treboule House built by the Railways in the 1860s to replace a demolished
farmhouse and turn right opposite the small farm at Treboule Cross. After a few
yards go through a gate leading onto a metalled footpath that straddles the brow of
the hill with stunning views all around. Continue along this path, aptly named
Longfield, which after about half a mile descends steeply into the village. (In autumn
this route can get quite slippery with stones and leaves.) The railway is on the right
as you reach the main road.
If you prefer less hills turn left at the T junction, but instead of taking the first
right turn, continue for another half mile and take the third turning on the right on
the bend at Triffle Farm. (The road at this point is just about to descend into a
valley) Keep to this road until Polbathic, take a left then right turn and you are
on the road to St Germans.
If you still have plenty of energy after visiting the beach return to the coast road
as directed above, but instead of taking a right turn continue on the coast road
through Downderry and on to Seaton where there is another beach, café, pub and shop.
To return from here turn right past the shop and pub and up the hill. At the cross
roads at the top of this very steep hill (about 1˝ miles) go straight on, and down
another steep hill. Turn right at the bottom, then left at Polbathic onto the St
Germans road. The village is a mile from here.
